Clifford Law Offices Files Lawsuits Against CTA in Blue Line Fire

Press Release, 07/17/2006

Clifford Law Offices, on Monday, July 17, 2006, filed two lawsuits against the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) on behalf of two passengers who were injured in last week’s fire on the Blue Line.

Jasmin Nunez, of Chicago’s near northwest side and Eva Stachon of Harwood Heights suffered severe smoke inhalation while trying to escape from the underground subway tunnel after the 8 car train jumped the track just west of the Clark and Lake station last Tuesday.

Nunez, 27, and Stachon, 45, were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Nunez, a paralegal at a Chicago law firm, was in the last car and made her way to the seventh car where she assisted others in exiting. She then walked in total darkness and without any assistance or announcements from CTA personnel. Stachon, an executive secretary at the Illinois Attorney General’s office, was in the subway tunnel nearly an hour before she could make her way to safety.

The complaints filed in Cook County Circuit Court allege negligence against the mass transit system.
