Robert A. Clifford authored an op ed that appeared in Chicago Tribune on Sept. 12, 2018 that discussed the upcoming election of the retention of judges and the rating of them.
Clifford questioned the reasons for a lobbyist group to send out a survey to judges currently sitting on the bench when the election is non-partisan and should focus on their work on the bench.
A letter sent to all judges mentioned that a media blitz of the subjective “findings” would follow. Clifford questioned if the letter wasn’t a veiled reminder that its sender, the Illinois Civil Justice League along with other organizations like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, of its publicly stated ability to funnel millions of dollars into campaigns. Illinois is among 38 states that elect judges in some way.
