Nearly 20 family members from several countries who lost loved ones in the Boeing crash in Ethiopia earlier this year will be attending hearings scheduled this week before Congress where Boeing’s top executives are scheduled to testify.
Family members just returned from Ethiopia where they collected the remains of those who died in the March 10 crash of an Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max8 jet. They traveled this weekend to the nation’s capital to attend a hearing before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee on Tuesday (Oct. 29, 2019) at 10 a.m. Scheduled to testify are Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing CEO, and Boeing’s Vice President and Chief Engineer, John Hamilton. Also scheduled to testify are Robert Sumwalt, Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Christopher Hart, Chairman of the Joint Authorities Technical Review.
The full Committee on House Transportation and Infrastructure will hold a hearing on Wednesday (Oct. 30, 2019) at 10 a.m. Testifying there will be Muilenburg and Hamilton. The hearings are expected to last for hours. Family members will be available to speak to the media following each hearing.
Some of the family members, including Michael Stumo and Nadia Milleron, parents of Samya Stumo who was killed in the March 10 crash, will meet with Daniel Elwell, Deputy Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and who was Acting Administrator of the agency at the time of the two Boeing crashes in the past year. Family members will be available to speak to the press following that meeting today (Monday, Oct. 28) at 4 p.m. EST.
Families also are expected to meet with Boeing executives, including Muilenburg, following their testimony. Also part of that meeting will be Timothy Keating, Executive Vice President of Boeing’s Government Operations. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the families’ priorities of funding philanthropic efforts. Family members will be available to speak to the press following this meeting.
Lead counsel in the crash in Ethiopia, Robert A. Clifford, founder and senior partner of Clifford Law Offices in Chicago, will be available to speak to the press following the Wednesday hearing.
The Senate hearing is taking place at the Hart Senate Office Building, Room 216, and the House hearing is being held in the Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2167.
