Two attorneys at Clifford Law Offices obtained a $6 million verdict on behalf of a 41-year-old south suburban woman who died as a result of opioid addiction while under the care of a pain management physician.
Patrick F. Bradley and Nicholas T. Motherway, attorneys at Clifford Law Offices in Chicago, obtained the verdict following an eight-day trial before Cook County Circuit Court Judge John Ehrlich at the Daley Center. There was no offer in the case from defendants.
The five-woman-seven-man jury deliberated just three hours before returning the verdict against Dr. Holly Carobene of south suburban Harvey who cared for the patient for four years. The verdict also was against her company, Comprehensive Pain Care.
The plaintiff, Ebeilda Rameriz formerly of south suburban Oak Forest, left a husband and two adult children as well as a granddaughter she never got to see before she died in 2015. She went to Dr. Carobene for neck and back pain and remained under her care until her death due to opioid abuse.
“The defendant allowed this mom to become addicted and she died after abusing prescribed opioids,” Bradley said following the verdict. “It is very sad, but the jury realized that her death was avoidable, and she should be here today enjoying life.”
