Robert A. Clifford, founder and senior partner of Clifford Law Offices, and Dan Webb, Chairman and partner at Winston & Strawn, will take on their two legal “rivals,” Patrick Fitzgerald and Patrick Collins who will prosecute the case of Megacles, leader of Athens in National Hellenic Museum’s Mock Trial on March 1st, 2018.

Fitzgerald, of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, served for 10 years as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. Collins, of Perkins Coie LLP, served for nearly 10 years as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

These powerhouse legal teams will argue the case of whether Megacles saved Athenian democracy or did he betray the rule of law when as leader of Athens he ordered the death of Cylon who unsuccessfully attempted a coup against the city and took refuge in a temple but left the sanctuary on the Acropolis. Megacles immediately ordered his execution.

Christina Faklis, law clerk to the Hon. Charles P. Kocoras, U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Illinois, and Tinos Diamantatos of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP will join the trial teams in cross examination.

The mock trial will be held at the Rubloff Auditorium at the Art Institute of Chicago at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1. The hundreds of expected attendees participate in determining the guilt or innocence of the defendant. A jury of luminaries from Chicago will constitute the jury of 12 that also casts a vote. Last year the mock trial of Antigones was broadcast on Chicago’s public television station, WTTW.

Judge Richard A. Posner and Senior Judge William J. Bauer of the U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit, and Senior Judge Kocoras will once again serve as judges, joined by U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman and Cook County Circuit Court Judge Anna H. Demacopoulos.

Sponsorships for the program are available by contacting Konstantinos Armiros at the National Hellenic Museum at 312-876-6664 or Francesca Peppiatt at fpeppiatt@hellenicmuseum.org.
