Clifford Law Offices Obtains $7.4 Million Settlement on Behalf of Man Paralyzed during Spinal Surgery

Keith A. Hebeisen and Sarah F. King, attorneys at Clifford Law Offices, obtained a $7.4 million settlement on behalf of a young man paralyzed from the waist down following the neurosurgeon’s decision to deviate from an established spinal cyst drainage procedure without the patient’s consent.

Kelvin Kakazu, 38, awoke from surgery on July 20, 2013 without feeling in his feet or legs. Video produced during discovery revealed that the neurosurgeon had cauterized and cut a contributing spinal artery. Multiple medical experts opined that the neurosurgeon’s decision to unnecessarily cut the spinal artery left Mr. Kakazu paralyzed from the chest down.

“Mr. Kakazu walked into the hospital on his own two feet and left paraplegic. This settlement will pay for the equipment and assistance he will require to navigate life from a wheelchair.” – Sarah F. King

The case was set for trial before Judge Robert E. Senechalle, Jr. of the Cook County Circuit Court. The parties settled on July 26, 2019, just 3 days before the Daley Center trial was to begin.
