Cook County Circuit Court Chief Judge Timothy Evans hosted the Women Everywhere (“WE”) Judicial Reception to recruit judges and attorney volunteers interested in hosting groups during the organization’s upcoming Education Day Project.
WE President Sarah F. King, associate at Clifford Law Offices, introduced Evans who spoke of the need for more women to be made aware of the judicial system at an early age.
King spoke of WE’s annual Education Day that brings 200-300 Chicago public high school girls on tours of state and federal courts. The girls meet with participating judges and attorneys. WE also provides a luncheon and speaker.
This year’s Education Days are scheduled Feb. 26 at Daley, Federal, Domestic Violence, Markham and Skokie courthouses and Feb. 28 at the Criminal Court (26th & California).
“The day is aimed at providing a positive experience with the legal system and in inspiring these young women to explore careers in law, government and criminal justice,” King said. Each girl who participates in Education Day is eligible to apply for one of the four $2,500 college scholarships WE awards each year to a graduating high school senior committed to attending a college or trade school.
Additionally, WE will be holding its Annual Fundraiser to raise money to underwrite the 2020 scholarships and projects Feb. 20 from 5-7 p.m. at Petterino’s, 150 N. Dearborn St., Chicago. Tickets to the event can be purchased at WomenEverywhereAnnualFundraiser2020.eventbrite.com.
