Yvette Loizon Named by Mayor Lightfoot to Interim Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability

Yvette C. Loizon, partner at Clifford Law Offices, is one of seven individuals appointed by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot to serve on a Chicago community commission that is charged with enhancing public safety and law enforcement accountability.

In making the announcement on Monday, August 29, 2022, at a mayoral press conference, Lightfoot notes that this interim Commission will have the duty to conduct a nationwide search for a new police superintendent if necessary, will have input on the police department’s budget and will work to restore trust between citizens and police. The Commission is also tasked with oversight of the Police Board and COPA.

A permanent Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability will be appointed on February 28th under a landmark City Council ordinance approved in July 2021 that creates civilian oversight of the police. Loizon was one of 14 potential nominees vetted and recommended by City Council’s Public Safety Committee for the interim Commission.

Loizon has a depth of experience in dealing with law enforcement policy prior to her becoming a partner at Clifford Law Offices. She supervised a specialized violent crimes investigation unit designed to focus law enforcement resources on neighborhoods most impacted by violence and was cross-designated as a Special Assistant United States Attorney where she focused on long-term violent crime investigations and organized crime. Yvette most recently served as Chief Legal Counsel for the Illinois State Police (ISP). She oversaw the ISP’s legal department and provided guidance and advice to the ISP and the Governor’s Office on a multitude of legal and legislative issues impacting law enforcement, particularly during the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis.

“I am honored to serve on the Interim Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability and look forward to working with the committed members of the Commission, invested community members, and dedicated public servants to effectively build relationships of trust and cooperation among groups that must necessarily work together to ensure all Chicagoans are safe and thriving,” Loizon said. “I am grateful to have the support of my colleagues and friends at Clifford Law Offices who are equally committed to safety in our communities and tirelessly work to prevent senseless tragedies from reoccurring.”

Robert A. Clifford, founder and senior partner at Clifford Law Offices, said, “All of us at Clifford Law Offices are so proud of Yvette’s work and her continued contribution to the citizens of Chicago and beyond. Her selflessness in working so hard round the clock for justice and safety is only exemplified in this important appointment.”
